The Gwagwalada Substation was commissioned a week ago in Abuja. This is in line with the understanding that Nigeria's electricity delivery targets cannot simply be met with Gencos (Electricity Generating Companies) but also with renewed investment in transmission and distribution. The sub station was constructed to service Abuja and the wider region. The project took 14 months to actualize and it is a 330/132/33kv facility. The project was commissioned by Vice President - Namadi Sambo, with the Minister of Power (Chinedu Nebo) also in attendance. Gwagwalada is the fifth substation built to service the NIPPs (National Independent Power Project). The NIPPs are gas fired power plants built in the South of Nigeria. Gwagwalada will allow power to be evacuated from one of such plants; the Gerugu II plant in Kogi State. Availability of Gas, is of course another problem altogether that the Nigerian Government is struggling to contend with, but the construction of new infrastructure such as Gwagwalada is at least stabilizing the network. |
