The Gwagwalada Substation was commissioned a week ago in Abuja. This is in line with the understanding that Nigeria's electricity delivery targets cannot simply be met with Gencos (Electricity Generating Companies) but also with renewed investment in transmission and distribution. The sub station was constructed to service Abuja and the wider region. The project took 14 months to actualize and it is a 330/132/33kv facility. The project was commissioned by Vice President - Namadi Sambo, with the Minister of Power (Chinedu Nebo) also in attendance. Gwagwalada is the fifth substation built to service the NIPPs (National Independent Power Project). The NIPPs are gas fired power plants built in the South of Nigeria. Gwagwalada will allow power to be evacuated from one of such plants; the Gerugu II plant in Kogi State. Availability of Gas, is of course another problem altogether that the Nigerian Government is struggling to contend with, but the construction of new infrastructure such as Gwagwalada is at least stabilizing the network. |

Kashimbilla Hydro Construction The 40 MW Kashimbilla Hydro-Electric Project, situated in Taraba State (See here: for Brief Introduction), is designed for agricultural, electrical requirements and water supply. The project is being handled by SCC Nigeria and will be delivered sometime next year. The image above shows the left and right embankments of the project. Kainji Hydro-Power Plant Maintenance Works Three Rotor Units at the Kainji Hydroelectric Plant are being Rehabilitated. The 1G5 Rotor was lifted on the October 30, While the 1G6 Rotor was lifted on the 15th of December. The works will be completed by the end of December. The plant has an installed capacity of 760 MW and is therefore a major player in Nigeria's electricity delivery efforts. These are the first time that these units are being maintained since installation in the 1970s and the very feat of lifting the Rotors and other components such as Turbines, was a new challenge. The Ogidigben Gas City, is a greenfield industrial park that is situated 220 km, southeast of Lagos and 60 km west of Warri. The development is centered around a gas processing facility and as such, the delivery of gas for the domestic market, as well as for uses within the site will be made possible. The primary objective of the Ogidigben Gas City, however will be to transition from "Gas as Fuel" to "Gas as Feedstock". The project will thus, feature petrochemical and fertilizer plants, in addition to IPPs.
According to Vanguard, the specification for the project is as follows: "The gas city will be developed in phases. In the first phase, it will comprise key anchor projects like the CPF, 150 MW independent power plant, IPP, 2.6 Mtpa fertilizer plant and infrastructure, including roads, a new port, residential, commercial accommodation and public facilities. Later phases will see the expansion of the CPF, addition of major petrochemical facility and additional gas-based, secondary and service industries. Ultimately, the intent is to build a processing capacity to the point where there would be enough ethane available to supply a world-scale petrochemical plant. This would be implemented in phase 3, which would expand the CPF capacity to 2,400 MMscf/d There is something that people do not know yet. The Gas Revolution Industrial City is the first industrial complex to be developed under the Gas Revolution Agenda. It is a model that will be replicated in other industrial complexes to be established in the Niger-Delta region where gas is available." - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/05/16bn-ogidigben-gas-cityll-revolutionize-nigeria-gov-uduaghan/#sthash.vy4YvdaN.dpuf The Kashimbila Hydropower Station, being constructed in Taraba State, is a 40 MW Multipurpose Dam. Feasibility and the detailed designs for the dam was executed by International firm Aurecon. The dam was initially slated for 18 MW capacity, but following further studies, was expanded to 40 MW. The dam also includes other components such as a water supply intake and a water treatment plant, Construction at the site has attained 95% completion. The plant will be able to deliver water to 400,000 people and will also be able to service 2000 hectares of farmland, with irrigation, assisting 8000 people. Although, the Federal Government have divested a lot of investment in the Power Sector to private entities, the Hydro Electric realm, is one area in which they have maintained a large presence. This project, which is valued at $1 Billion, was funded entirely by the Federal Government. The Mambilla Hydroelectric project (3050 MW), also in Taraba State, is also being spearheaded by the Federal Government and the contract is expected to be signed, this month (October).
