For more information on the Millennium Tower, have a look at our previous write up. The Millennium Tower, has been ongoing for quite some time, but that takes nothing away from the quality project, that it was designed to be.
The following update is a little dated, but the photography was worth the entry. All credit goes to Antonio Rizza for capturing the images. For more information on the Millennium Tower, have a look at our previous write up. The Millennium Tower, has been ongoing for quite some time, but that takes nothing away from the quality project, that it was designed to be. The development is being carried out by Italian firm Salini.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Terminal currently being built by CCECC (The second largest construction firm, operating in Nigeria), is a 3 Million PAX project. The development was spearheaded during the tenure of deposed Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah. The development has a GFA (Gross Floor Area) of 40,000 sqm. The new terminal being built by CCECC in Lagos, also has a GFA of 40,000 sqm. Kano, Enugu and Port Harcourt's new terminals, also being built by CCECC will each boast of 28,000 sqm. There has been a lot of speculation about the design appearances of the CCECC terminals, but as Blackborderbuild had theorized, the design of the new CCECC terminals in Lagos and Abuja are conforming to the models shown in the Aerotropolis animations. As can be seen in the image above, the design is more or less along the lines of many of the new terminals being developed across the country, albeit at a grander scale. The design, will not be winning any international design awards, but it is more modern than most Nigerian terminals, if that is any consolation. The design also shows new parking facilities (Multistory) and aero-bridges to facilitate movement. Simply from the visuals that we have here, the new terminal seems comparable in size to the existing terminal. CCECC plan to conclude the new Nnamdi Azikiwe Terminal by 2016, as with their other major terminals. Jabi Lake Mall will be the largest mall in Nigeria, when it is completed in Mid 2015. The mall will have a GLA (Gross Leasable Area) of 26,479 m2. It will be located just within 8km of the Abuja Business District. The anchor tenants are Game and Shoprite (No strangers to the Nigerian retail scene). The Jabi Lake area is largely under-developed and this mall is part of a larger concept (31 hectares), design by Studio Seilern Architects, for Duval Properties. Duval will be partnering with Actis, to complete the Jabi Lake Mall. The update below (From September 2014) shows that the Shoprite area, is at a more advanced stage than other parts of the mall. As usual, the South African retailers will most likely be the first to open up shop. The update also, shows that the central part of the mall is now taking shape. The following images are courtesy of Eurotech Facades, the firm behind the facade system of the SAT (Service Tower) and CT (Commercial Tower) being developed currently. We will continue to track this project, in the future. The image above, is of the Airport Station, situated at DNAA (Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport). It is the westernmost station in the network and will be able to service passengers, that do not wish to ply the busy Airport Expressway. More on the Airport Connection HERE. Image Credit for the Carlton Centre diagram goes to: Dean0 (Skyscraperpage.com) Blackborderbuild created the following comparison diagram of Nigeria's tallest buildings (being built & completed) alongside Africa's tallest building (Carlton Centre - 222.5 Metres). It should no longer be of any secret, that two of Nigeria's tallest developments are currently ongoing in in the Federal Capital Territory, namely: Millennium Towers & WTC Abuja. This diagram should shed some light on just where the two imposing and ongoing developments in Abuja stack up, both in Nigeria and in Africa. There are a few particularities however to clear up, as mentioned in a previous blog post. The first area of contention, is whether the Necom House (Nitel Building), should be measured to its antenna (Which is not an architectural feature, but telecoms infrastructure/light house). CTBUH measures such non architectural features in only 1 of the 3 categories, that it uses to measure tall buildings. The second area of contention is whether the Millennium Tower, should even be classed as a building. As mentioned in the previous blog entry, with less than 50% of its structural envelope habitable; it cannot be classed as such. Written by T.Adeniyi for Blackborderbuild. It has been quite a journey, but the Abuja Millennium tower, can finally see the light at the end. This has been the longest project tracked by Black Border Build and at the onset, such a long construction period (Over 8 years), was never anticipated. The development (Abuja Millennium Tower & Cultural Centre) is designed by Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti, a specialist in cultural buildings. Manfredi is, also the architect of the popular Millenium Park in Abuja. The Millenium Tower lies somewhere between 160m and 170m in height, depending on which sources you call upon, however the observation deck & revolving restaurant are at an elevation of 102m. The highest accessible point, is the kitchen at 106m. The project consists of three identical cylindrical tubes of varying heights, affixed to a leaf like structural envelope. The aforementioned envelope is being fitted with LED lighting systems, for illumination, during the night. The following update, which is a week old, shows that the tower is definitely within touching distance of the finish line. Unfortunately however, the counterpart structure of the tower; the Cultural Centre (The pyramidal building), has no such luck! There is still a lot of work remaining, before the 50m edifice, looks anything like the finished product. The Millenium tower, will not be breaking any international records, as far as height goes - but within the context of Abuja, it is certainly not going to be overshadowed. It should be pointed out, that even the World Trade Center 1 tower in Abuja, will be 157 metres in height, more or less! Union Bank in the Lagos Marina is 120 metres in height and Necom House in Lagos is 160 metres to the mast (A non architectural feature). Not breaking international records, but nationally it has no equal. With that said however, the millennium tower does not have at least 50% of its structural envelope as habitable space, therefore under the guidelines suggested by CTBUH, it cannot be considered a building, as such. |
