In our previous entry, we wrote about the Calabar Specialist Hospital in Cross River State. However across the border, to the North East of CRS, another modern hospital is being built that is even more impressive. The 20th Anniversary Specialist Hospital in Uyo, Akwa Ibom is also being finalized.
To make reference to the old pidgin adage "Better soup nah money kill am", the specialist hospital in Uyo is almost twice the total cost of the Specialist hospital being built in Calabar and while the latter is no pushover aesthetically, $75 Million worth of investment does make a difference in caliber. The Uyo hospital is boldly finished with composite panels, modern glazing and shading. When it is all said and done, the hospitals in Calabar and Uyo both have their positives and negatives.
The smaller scale of the Calabar Hospital offers for a more serene and modest outlook, which may be therapeutic for patients and comforting for visitors and staff. The main block of the Uyo hospital conversely features a central space with a cathedral roof, which separates two adjoining sections that boast of grand central voids, to permit natural lighting and air flow. These central voids and large open spaces, can be perceived as overwhelming or it can be thought as reinforcing unity and wholesomeness. Aside from the passive heating/cooling and symbolism, these large spaces may also foster way-finding and uncover the complexities of such a busy environment. Refreshingly, the Hospital will be commissioned in the coming months.
