The Calabar Golf Estate is being developed by the Cross River State Government (CRSG) alongside UACN Property Development Company (UPDC). It is designed by Copenhagen based International Architects; Arrow Architects. The project is being built on 32.5 hectares of land.

The Calabar Golf Estate is part of the Larger Summit Hills development. The maps aerial/map above however suggest that since the conceptualization of the project, the Golf Estate has since increased in scope, as seen in (this master-plan image). The Calabar International Conference Centre and the  Calabar International Golf Course are to the west of the Golf Estate, separated by Summit Hill's primary thoroughfare.

Renderings and plans of the Golf estate are shown above and to the left, while construction images from the site can be seen to the right.

The beauty of the estate lies in its seamless integration with the natural and existing topography. The design is however not overwhelmed by the landscape, with the form of the housing creating smaller intimate spaces. The materials and finishes are reminiscent of typical Scandinavian architectural simplicity.

September 2014 Update of Nigeria's Latest 18 Hole(r)

The new Calabar golf corse is an 18 hole international grade course that was designed by International Architects, Thomson Perrett & Lobb. Black Border Build initially covered this project in our July 2014 Entry (Click for the introduction).

This course is part of the larger Summit Hills project that is being developed in Calabar, Cross River State. For a little introduction on the scheme, visit their page.

The course was built through forest valleys, rubber plantations and is in close proximity to the Calabar River, providing a lot of diversity and character. The update (above), from September 2014 shows that work is on course (no pun intended) and we are very much excited, with the prospect of yet another International Grade course underway in Nigeria.

Summit Hills Golf Course Calabar
Summit Hills Golf Course
Written by T. Adeniyi

The Summit Hills golf course is the latest entrant into the big leagues of 18 hole in Nigeria. Two of the best courses in Nigeria are arguably the IBB Course in Abuja and the Uyo Course in Akwa Ibom. Summit Hills, however captures the most 'complete' leisure brand and that sets it aside from competition. The Uyo Course is attached to the Le Meridien Ibom brand and the IBB course are also planning to attach a hotel facility.

Summit Hills is all that and more. It will be in close proximity to a 300 rm Four Points Sheraton (****), as well as a monorail system connecting the larger master-plan to Tinapa. It will be flanked by a dedicated international conference facility (The first of its kind in Nigeria) and many more facilities such as a sprawling residential golf estate and a world class hospital.

This, does not in anyway suggest that the Summit Hills course will 'hide' behind its adjacent infrastructure. Designed by International architects Thomson Perrett & Lobb, this course will hold its own. The course responds to the local context, by retaining much of the existing vegetation and addressing the issues of erosion with ingenious 'soft' methods of vetivar Grass. These responses have a twofold benefit of minimizing earthworks, as well as preserving a more organic feel to the course.

Beyond Summit Hills, IBB & Uyo
  • There is the 18 Hole Golf Course located in Ilara Mokin, Ondo State (Design by famous golf architect Ron Garl) - Recently Completed
  • 18 Hole Golf Course, named Castle Rock Golf Course, located in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State (Also designed by Ron Garl) - Construction Underway
  • 18 Hole Lakowe Lakes Golf Course, located in the Lekki-Epe Axis and (Designed by  Robert O’Friel)

....and many more courses being developed or redeveloped across Nigeria. Nigeria has a long way to catch up to South Africa, both numerically and qualitatively, but it is certainly making progress.
