Nigeria Railway Commission (NRC) acquire more passenger coaches! The images in the slideshow above show the new procurement of Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) coaches at Apapa Port in Lagos Nigeria. These coaches will be operated by the Nigeria Railway Commission (NRC) and will ply the Federal Government railway corridor. The Diesel Multiple Units pictured above are 68 seater, air conditioned units, shipped from China. These are not the deliveries that we spoke of in this entry. The Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) for the Lagos Light Rail, will begin arriving in May 2015. T.Adeniyi for BBB

Contract with Toronto Metro fails to materialize
It should be noted that between 2010-2013, there was a lot of talk both officially and unofficially about Lagos State's desire to purchase refurbished subway cars from Toronto Metro for use in the ongoing Lagos Light Rail development. Blackborderbuild have been able to confirm however that the deal has failed to materialize with the H5 Car series of the Toronto Metro being scrapped entirely and only a few H6 Car Series remaining. LASG had initially planned to acquire 255 units of H5 and H6 trains.
It may be pontificated that the reason why LASG refused to go through with the contract and opt for Chinese EMUs (Electric Multiple Units) may be as a result of two issues
The Nigerian Railway Corporation have been known to acquire 'new' Diesel Multiple Units' that are being used along the Federal Lagos Mass Transit Service Route and also in the recently reopened Enugu - Port Harcourt Inter City service. This procurement however is about Electric Multiple Units, as the Lagos Light Rail will be powered by a dedicated Independent Power Plant.
Written by Ayodeji Adeniyi for BBB The following update of the Port Harcourt Monorail shows updates of what is presumably the Isaac Boro Station, Sharks Park Station/Maintenance Facilities. Refer to the previous entry on the Monorail Project (for more information) and also refer to the October 2014 Update (Which included exquisite photography of the Monorail). Although the completion date for Phase 1a has constantly been revised, the realization of that segment of that project is entirely feasible, as that leg of the rail project is mostly completed. It is however believed that the Summit Hills Monorail that will link Tinapa with the Summit Hlills Master Plan, will be operational before the Port Harcourt Monorail. Notwithstanding, there have already been some preliminary test runs as can be seen in the pictures above. Written by T.Adeniyi for BBB
As we noted in our previous blog entry, the Abuja - Kaduna Railway is drawing to a close. December is essentially the deadline as things stand and operations should commence in February 2015. Over 300 million USD worth of Chinese construction machinery, equipment, building supplies and rollingstock were acquired in the development of the Standard Gauge rail line. The project has a design speed of 150 km/hr and will allow passengers to travel between Abuja and Kaduna in just about an hour. The Abuja - Kaduna railway forms part of the larger Lagos - Kano Standard Gauge project, which is a contract to the tune of $8.3 Billion. The Abuja - Kaduna project itself is an $850 million project and required the development of 9 stations along its route. The two main stations are the Idu Station and the Kaduna Terminal (shown in the Map below). Written by T.Adeniyi for BBB On the 20th of November 2014, the contract for the 1385 km Coastal Rail project was signed by Nigerian officials and members of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). As we mentioned in our previous piece on the coastal railway, the value of the project was initially put at $13.1 billion, however following further design development, that amount has been adjusted to reflect the more detailed analysis that has been ongoing in the past months. The new amount is $ 11.97 billion, which still puts the project firmly in place as China's single largest investment abroad. The project cuts through 10 coastal states of Nigeria and has a total of 22 stations. The design speed is 120 km/hr and the single track mileage distance is 1385 km. JULY-NOVEMBER 2014 UPDATES (LATEST) Written by T.Adeniyi - November 2014 The Abuja-Kaduna Railway draws to a close and it is only fitting that we provide some updates regarding Nigeria's second ongoing Inter-City Standard Gauge project. This is a 186.5km railway project being constructed by CCECC to ferry passengers between Idu Station in the Nation's Capital and neighbouring Kaduna. The project can facilitate train movements at speeds of up to 150 km/hr. The railway features 26 rail bridges, five box bridges and 30 overpass bridges. The project was financed with $500 million from the China Exim Bank. Construction is expected to be completed next month in December. A CCECC celebratory ceremony is planned for the 29th of November.
The Abuja Light Rail Phase One (50% Completed) The image at the left was taken by Joe Ombuor and shows the track work of the Airport Line (Lot 3 Segment). The image in the centre is a station that we have not been able to identify, but it is possibly the Idu Station (Which is a transfer Station and would explain why three tracks can be seen). The Image to the far right shows a CCECC Test/Maintenance vehicle, with a max design speed of 100 km/hr (Photo credited to: Adam Smith International). On the 24th of September 2014, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Lot 1B Segment was signed. It is a 31km segment and will cost a total of $792 Million. Lots 1A and Lot 3 are the segments that are currently under construction and have a total length of 45.2km. Lots 1A and Lot 3 are Phase One of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit project and are expected to be completed by October 2015, according to Managing Director of CCECC, Cao Baogong. The video shown below, shows the recent inspection of the phase one progress. T.Adeniyi (BBB) |
