BAT Rising Sun is a 13 floor, mid-rise structure that was built by Nigerian construction veterans, CAPDAL for British & American Tobacco. The building is located in Alfred Rewane road and boasts of 19,500 sqm of Grade A office and residential spaces.
The building stands proud, as one of the most elegant in Lagos, with tasteful recesses, cantilevers and an uplifting podium. The most impressive aspect of this mixed-use development, is however not its form, but rather the quality of its facade. The base of the building is enclosed in a multi-coloured glass panels, which present the recently completed structure, with its unique vibrancy. The top of the building is even more complex, with shading devices in some elevations , that protect the balconies from the harsh Lagos sun. While other elevations, feature recesses that give the project, a little bit of character.
The white panels, are however more than meets the eye, they are Larcore A2 aluminium composite panels. These international grade panels are ventilated, fire rated, recyclable, energy efficient and effective for insulation. They give the upper levels of the building, a clean look, and the finish will also be less prone to weathering from constant rainfall and dirt. This is a problem in many exposed concrete buildings in Ikoyi and Nigeria as a whole. Exposed concrete buildings are especially prone to weathering, regardless of the quality of their finishing, which can only be prevented with careful design. As such, the BAT rising sun has inherent qualities that reduce maintenance, while providing a subtle aesthetic boost.
This Grade A building has a simple form, but the attention to details, is what renders it breathtaking. It is irrefutably, one of the better designed structures in the high brow district of Ikoyi.
